Please sponsor me for the AIDS Walk!

I'm walking with the Hos of Harm Reduction team tomorrow, and I've been so busy I've hardly raised any money yet! We have a team minimum of $1,000 and we're only up to $150. If we make our team minimum St. James Infirmary will receive a $15,000 grant. Since I dragged ass on this it's last minute so please donate online:

http://aidswalksanfrancisco2007.kintera.org/yalith

If you need more convincing, maybe this form letter will help you!

I am writing to let you know that I have registered for AIDS Walk San Francisco and am very excited about the event. This is a very important issue to me so I have set an ambitious fundraising goal. I want to do as much as I can to make a difference in the lives of men, women, and children affected by HIV and AIDS. Even though there has been a lot of publicity about drug treatments which are prolonging some people's lives, they don't work for everyone and there is still no cure in sight. Moreover, young people are still getting infected at alarmingly high rates.

I want your help. Will you please sponsor me for the AIDS Walk? Just click on the website address below to enter my personalized web page and charge your donation. Thank you, in advance, for supporting this important cause and for showing that you join me in wanting to end this epidemic.

It combines seasonings from sesame, garlic, poppyseed, onion and salt bagels — and it's really delicious. In New York City, it makes perfect sense to order “Everything with nothing” — an Everything bagel, plain, without butter or cream cheese.

One morning this month, a mother and her boy were placing a breakfast order at the Market Cafe in Citigroup Center. The store was busy and ready to get busier, with fresh sandwiches, pizzas, fruit, rolls and salads stocked behind the counter.

“A plain bagel toasted, with butter; an Everything with ham, and a sesame with cream cheese," said the lady.

“We're out of Everything," replied the cashier.

Neither of their faces registered a hint of irony, and the lady revised her order.

Paul Klenk

oh, also (even more school stuff ahead)

I signed up to do a presentation three weeks from today for The Family Yesterday and Today. I'm presenting on the history of public discourse about incest. To be reasonable about scope, I'm talking about the US, but that still clearly includes some Freud because of his influence here. I'm going to do a general overview of what was going on until the 80's, and then go more in depth with the whole repressed memories controversy, survivor's movement, and backlash. Then I'll say something about what's happened since then. I started taking notes on it already during class. I'm such a dork.

Sources I've thought of so far:
Intimate Matters- this was for my sex history class three years ago and I've used it in a bunch of classes since
Father Daughter Incest
The Courage to Heal (especially loving all the changes from edition to edition!)
Law and Order: SVU (for a modern media representation, I might show a clip, but how to choose? any suggestions?)

So, my older friends who clearly remember the 80's, what if anything did you hear about all of this? How much did people talk about it? I'm interested in hearing about discussions and representations of incest in popular culture.

argh, i love my school but am not so into the president

How convenient that they should send me this e-mail today, after this article came out in SF Weekly: http://www.sfweekly.com/Issues/2006-10-25/news/smith.html

Apparently, they've known about this for like two months. Grrrr.

To: The New College Community

From: Martin Hamilton, President

We at New College have all been shocked to learn of the news released by
Gonzaga University regarding inappropriate sexual activities by Jack Leary
while he was president there in the 1960¹s. This information had been
suppressed, and we were not aware of anything of these matters prior to
their announcement; nor were we aware of anything similar happening during
his tenure as founder and president of New College. New College extends its
sympathy and concern to the victims of Jack¹s conduct and earnestly hopes
for their healing.

We are sorry that the news of this reached many students, staff and faculty
through last week¹s SF Weekly rather than through New College channels as
was intended.

On Wednesday November 1st, at 12:30 pm in the New College Cultural Center,
we will be holding a Community Meeting to fully discuss all the issues
related to Jack Leary¹s behavior, the Weekly article, and what our next
steps should be. We hope to see you there.

Okay, I guess my hair is going to be blue.

It says "Jet Grape" on the bottle. How is that blue? It's not even a purplish blue. Just blue. Last time I had blue hair was for my prom. It looked awful when it faded. The good news is that this is temporary/semi-permanent.

This was also my first experiment with streaks. Haha, we'll see how this goes. I'm worried my hair is going to be blue with weird patches of blonde. Eep.

woah, really?

I find it kind of hilarious that apparently test prep coaching is a waste of time. I wonder how I feel about the idea of having a job that's potentially a waste of time.

From the College Board web site-
"Points to Note:

* Coaching companies' current estimates of the benefits of coaching for the SAT I are much too high. Coached students are only slightly more likely to have large score gains than uncoached students. In addition, about 1/3 of students experience no score gain or score loss following coaching.
* The typical gain associated with coaching is 8 points for verbal and 18 points for math. Coaching seems to result in about one more verbal question correct for 25-30 hours of effort and one more math question correct for 8 or more hours of effort.
* Results are based on a survey of 1995-96 SAT I test takers of whom 427 were coached and 2,733 were uncoached. For purposes of this study, coaching is considered to include any and all activities conducted in special preparation programs offered to students outside their schools.

Source reference "Preparing for the SAT--An Update" by D.E. Powers, College Board Report No. 98-5, College Entrance Examination Board, New York: 1998, ETS Research Report No. 98-34, Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ: 1998; also see "Effects of Coaching on SAT I: Reasoning Test Scores" by D.E.
I have an idea!

The Oakland Unified School District is hiring scabs. Be a scab for a good cause! I have a good idea that I can't act on myself, but maybe somebody else can. My idea is to go get hired as a "temporary teacher". Act like a normal excited educator-to-be. Once they leave you alone in the room with the kids (which they will), teach them about labor issues. Talk to them about why the teachers are striking and connect it to their curriculum if possible by teaching about a related aspect or time period of labor history. Make it fun. Teach to the students' interests. Give them resources to further their own learning. Do it until you get caught and dismissed. You just have to pass a background check, have a bachelor's degree, and do decently in the interview. I doubt they're going to be all that picky. I wish I could do this, but I don't have a bachelor's degree yet. Obviously, feel free to pass this idea on to as many people as possible! It would be awesome if a lot of people could do it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emergency Temporary Teachers, $300 per day
Reply to: see below
No contact info listed below? The District has arranged for fingerprinting and the CBEST Waiver process to be conducted at its administrative offices and it will pay the costs associated with those procedures if applicants undergo them at our administrative offices. The District has arranged for TB testing to be performed and tests results read at Concentra Medical Center located at Jack London Square. The District will pay the cost associated with TB testing if applicants have the test administered and results read at Concentra.

To be interviewed, applicants must:

(a) present two forms of official identification such as a driver’s license, passport, social security card, or California I.D;

(b) an official transcript with seal indicating graduation or a valid teaching credential;

(c) complete an application, and

(d) attend successfully complete the interview process.

The hiring events will take place from April 3- 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 1025 2nd Avenue, Oakland, CA 94606, Room 223.

Due to unfortunate circumstances (as in, REALLY bad customer service that resulted in screwing me over), I´ll be coming in to NYC tomorrow instead of today. That makes my first possible hanging out day Wednesday. I miss you all and I can´t wait to go home (in the general sense, of knowing where I am, speaking the language, and having friends).

ow ow, but smiley

Things are so much better today. I made a friend and she´s really nice. She´s not so into hanging out at the Queeruption space either, because she´s concerned about the toxicity of the place (she has a point). We went back to Las Ramblas today, then to La Bocqueria- an open air market, and then to the beach. The beach was really nice. Yay for swimming in the Mediterranean! The water was so calm, there were only itty bitty waves that didn´t break, so I was able to hang out floating on my back for a while, which I dont´t think I´ve ever done in the ocean before. My back got all sunburned. I was specifically looking at my skin every ten minutes or so to make sure I wasn´t burning, but somehow I couldn´t tell while I was still in the sun. So ow ow ow on that. Hopefully I´ll be able to find some aloe vera gel soon.

That´s mostly it. The trip is so much better now that I´ve decided that it´s not my problem if the folks at Queeruption don´t want to talk to me because I don´t look punk enough. Their loss.

Do I look like Kelly Osbourne?

I've found it a little odd for a very long time that I don't look like anybody else at all. Not even a cross between two different people. But it was recently brought to my attention that I look like Kelly Osbourne. I don't remember who told me that, but I certainly didn't think of it myself since I didn't know what she looked like until I looked up a picture of her. I don't know enough about her to have an opinion, so I'm attaching no value to whether or not I look like her. Obviously my boobs are bigger, but other than that. What do you think?
